Why you understand English but freeze when you speak

Understanding and speaking are two different skills, trained in different ways. Here is why the gap appears and what closes it.

You watch films without subtitles. You read work emails without effort. Then someone asks a simple question out loud and your mind goes blank.

This is not a vocabulary problem. It is a retrieval problem.

Recognition is not production

Understanding English is recognition: the word arrives, and you match it to a meaning you already hold. Speaking is production: you start from meaning and must retrieve the word, in the right form, in the right order, fast enough to stay in the conversation.

Recognition is generous, because context fills the gaps. Production is not. It gives you no clues at all.

Most self-study builds only recognition. Films, articles, podcasts, apps. All input. Then people are surprised that output is weak.

The three things that actually close the gap

Speak before you are ready. Waiting until you "feel ready" postpones the problem forever. Readiness is the result of speaking, not its condition.

Make mistakes in front of someone who will correct them. Fluent-but-wrong is a real trap. Errors that go uncorrected for a year become permanent.

Repeat the same situations. Fluency is not general. It is situational. If you need English for meetings, rehearse meetings, not "general conversation".

What we do about it

Our lessons are built around talking, not listening to a teacher talk. Expect to speak for most of the session from the first lesson, including when your sentences are still short and clumsy. That stage is unavoidable, and it is much shorter than people fear.

The learners who progress fastest are not the ones with the best grammar. They are the ones willing to sound imperfect for a few weeks.

If that first lesson sounds intimidating, that is normal. It is exactly why the first call is free.
